Act 231

When visiting a museum, consider a multi pass

We are in the Nation’s capital awash in museums and monuments. If you plan your outings carefully, there are great savings to be had on admission.

Act 221

Hand it down

I’m visiting family back east. Among my favourites is getting to know my new nephew. While a new baby in the family brings the nearly insurmountable urge to empty baby gap of every adorable outfit, I have done my best to resist. Instead, I collected some of my boys most beloved baby toys and brought them for him. It’s more meaningful and the boys are thrilled to hand down their favourites to their little cousin and he seems to be happy about it too.

Act 214

Get back to basics

We are 14 for dinner at a family cottage. While it might have been easier to go for convenience and buy pre made burgers and pre made fixings, I insisted we go old school, buy the basic ingredients and do it ourselves. It saves money and it adds value. People appreciate things more when they come from the kitchen rather than the grocery aisle. Crowds like this around the dinner table remind me of my grandparents who had 14 kids. This was just another ordinary day for them. It’s no wonder they were such good cooks and such careful stewards of their resources. There were no big box stores, no wholesale clubs, just a general store and alot of planning. It paid off for them and it can pay off for us too. So get back to basics. It’s time well spent (and it tastes better too).

Act 211

Give thanks with food

Tomorrow we head off from ten wonderful days in the maritimes. Destination – la belle province – my emotional home.

But before I head off, I tried to prepare a few bits and bites for my lovely hosts as a way of thanking them for their lovely hospitality.

On days like this, full of food and fondness, I’m reminded that we all have choices in life. My plan A was to build a life or career of corporate success. But love got in the way and with it came a life long appreciation of what matters most in life: family, friends and happiness. In many ways, it’s a longer path than that to physical wealth. But it pays off in ways that money can never measure.

Enjoy the people you love and remind them of it from time to time. It’s free and it’s priceless all at once.

Merci au maritimes. A bientot ma belle province!
